Formed in 1999, Lemae Group Ltd., LLC (doing business as Lemae Group Wines) is a minority woman owned wine importer headquartered in Atlanta, GA. How We Do It
Lemae Group performs these valuable services using a comprehensive approach. We partner with our wine producers. We import magnificent wines which we source from both large and small estate-level vineyards. We like family-owned wines in which the families themselves impart the very spirit of Old World wine making – a spirit which is shown by their unique love of quality wines, their attention to detail, and their pride in the fruits of their labors. Our wine producer partners truly create some of the very finest wines in the world.
Lemae Group’s principals are experienced world travelers with years of wine education. We take the time to personally visit our wine producers at their vineyards. We work to develop both personal and business relationships with them. Our approach allows us to have unique and valuable insights into the regions, the vineyards, the families and their wines – which in turn helps us to identify, target and penetrate the best potential markets for their wines here in the U.S.
Our Story
Lemae Group Wines was the vision of our co-founders, Donald L. and Vela Mitchell. Donald who is now deceased, was a chemist and an attorney who loved to "mix things up" in the lab, the kitchen and the courtroom. During a vacation that he and his wife, Vela, took to Portugal with their friends Rory and Gay Wright, the Mitchells met a really cool Portuguese couple during their flight. By the time they all landed in Portugal, the couples had become the best of friends, and Don and Vela were subsequently introduced to Portuguese wines.
From this friendship, Don and Vela formed Lemae Group Ltd. LLC, with the mission to bring the fine wines of Portugal to the United States. Initially, Don ran this small boutique wine importing company, and he expanded its selection to include additional wine brands from not only Portugal, but from France, Italy and Spain as well. After Don's passing the company is now run 100% by his wife Vela Mitchell. Lemae Group is honored to continue to this day many of those valued relationships with our founding group of Wine Producers.
Old World Meets New Tastes
Unfortunately, Don passed away in 2009, but not before leaving behind a rich legacy of providing America with a premium selection of European wines. Today, his wife Vela and the Lemae Group Wines team continue to keep his legacy alive by working with some of the finest wine producers in Europe. Our reds are outstanding, and our whites range in taste from mild and fruity, to buttery and easy to drink.
Our continued vision is to introduce American “New World” tastes and palates to wines that are the product of “Old World” small wineries that have grown grapes and produced some of the best wines in the world for hundreds of years.
